We were especially excited to join Ashley and Alex for their Great Sand Dunes engagement session as this spot holds a special place in our hearts and its unparalleled beauty makes it one of our favorite places in Colorado. They had never been to the Sand Dunes, therefore we knew these two were in for a real treat!
We began the session at Sacred Whiteshell Mountain earlier than anticipated when we saw rain in the forecast. Ashley is a big fan of the rolling greens and we definitely agreed that it would be nice to explore a variety of landscapes. Our time at Sacred Whiteshell Mountain was short and sweet. We were only there for a few minutes when the weather shifted quickly and a sprinkle turned into a downpour within a matter of seconds. We retreated back to our cars with umbrellas in-hand, but since the storm clouds completely surrounded us, we decided to take off to the dunes instead.
We really loved getting to know these two better and quickly realized we were in good company for this evening adventure. The rain cleared out the park crowds so when the storms eventually subsided, we had the whole place to ourselves. We didn’t know how long the thunderstorms would hold off for, so we stayed relatively close to the base dunes.
Ashley and Alex popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate their engagement and we had some fun in the sand traversing these deceivingly large dunes. Climbing in sand at elevation as the ground gives out beneath you is a whole other level of exercise, but the views were no doubt worth the trek. We stopped to dip our feet in Medano Creek and grab a couple of blue hour photos on the way back. We can’t wait to celebrate these two next June during their wedding at The Manor House!
